The
Unknown Commandant
The
Life and Times of Denis Barry 1883–1923
Denis
Barry

The
Unknown Commandant gets its Kilkenny launch on
Wednesday 21 July 2010 at 8.30 p.m. Brian Cody, manager
of the Kilkenny hurling team, will be in James Stephens
GAA Club to honour Commandant Denis Barry, the author's
uncle and subject of the book.
Born
in Ballymartle, County Cork, Denis Barry toiled in the shadows
of Terence MacSwiney and Tomás MacCurtain in the
tumultuous Irish War of Independence. A brave soldier, patriot
and sportsman, he played hurling with Blackrock, Cork, and
when Blackrock won the first four-in-a-row from 1910 to
1913, Denis was selected to play with each team. He also
played football with Lees, a team representing drapers’
trade assistants employed in Cork City. Hunger strike ended
his life at the Curragh Military Prison in 1923. Controversy
surrounded his death when the government refused to release
the body to his grieving family. In size and tone, his funeral
cortege was similar to those that marked the burials of
MacCurtain and MacSwiney and, in more peaceful times, of
Christy Ring and Jack Lynch but the then Bishop Daniel Cohalan
refused to allow Denis’ remains to be brought into
any church in the diocese or to allow any priests to officiate
at the funeral.
Finally, 86 years later, on 4 December 2009, the Department
of Defence awarded a posthumous service medal to Commandant
Denis Barry for service from 1917 to 1921.

A
Walking Guide
Tony
Kirby

Tony
Kirby, author of The Burren and the Aran Islands – A
Walking Guide, also has a website, Heart of Burren Walks.
The website
has just had a major upgrade. Each month the newsletter
will include Heart of Burren walks news, Tony's Burren blogs
for that particular month and it will also highlight selected
Burren events.
Both the walks menu and the website have been extended to
include 2010 expanded summer schedule, heritage education
in schools (Rocky Burren, Cool Schools), farm walks, spirituality
walks, Burren eco breaks and the book.
Tony is really excited about the Blog from the Burren region
which will be all about people, places, food, music, heritage,
farming and much, much more. The first blog is a profile
of Eva Harald, a Swedish speaking native of Finland, who
runs a small free range pig farm near the Burren gateway
village of Kilfenora.
